Pro-life Essay

Pro-life is a movement that gained popularity from the debate on the nature of abortion. Abortion has had its share of controversy in the United States since many people have different opinions regarding it. In 1973, the United States Supreme Court made a landmark decision in the Roe v. Wade case, which gave women the right to have an abortion without interference from the government. The decision has been a subject of criticism, leading to the formation of the pro-life movement, which proves that the life of a human begins when the ovary and the sperm cell make contact, making abortion illegal. The pro-life movement believes that life begins during fertilization, people should not use birth control and the roe v. wade decision should be overturned.

Consent to Sex is Consent to Pregnancy

According to the pro-life movement consent to sex is consent to pregnancy. They believe that sexual intercourse is the only way a woman can have a child. For this reason, any woman who engages in sex should be ready to have a child. Once the woman becomes pregnant after having sex, she must have the child, even if she is not ready for children. The pro-life movement argues that abstaining from sex is the only alternative people can choose to have when they do not want to have children.

The pro-life movement believes that pregnancy begins during the fertilization of the egg. They state that all stages of human development matter. According to pro-lifers, the evidence of life is seen in the development of the egg. It is an indication of hope and contribution to society. The woman who agreed to have sex should also give the fertilizing egg an opportunity to live.

Right to Life vs. Right to Freedom

The movements supporting abortion argue that women have the right to choose what to do with their pregnancy. They claim that denying them the right to choose abortion is equal to denying them their right. However, a group of pro-life women argues that the right to life outweighs the right of any individual. Before people can access any right in the country, they must be given a chance to live, which is achieved when a birth is allowed during and after pregnancy. According to the pro-life movement, women’s right to control their bodies cannot outweigh the right to give another person life.

The pro-life movement counters the pro-choice argument which says that denying women the right to abortion is taking their freedom. Pro-lifers agree that women need to be liberated from social constructs dominant in society. However, giving them the right to abort their pregnancy does not improve women’s freedom. Individuals against abortion argue that what women need is to be given an opportunity to survive financially and socially as mothers. They need cheap, accessible, and available childcare settings. The country also needs to create a society that acknowledges the needs of mothers by providing flexible working hours and maternity leaves.

No Justification of Abortion

A common justification for abortion is when a woman becomes pregnant when they are raped. Pro-lifers, however, argue that rape can never justify abortion because the problem was the rape incident and not the pregnancy. One writer gave an analogy stating that the country has pregnant women suffering from starvation. In such a case, the problem is not pregnancy but starvation.

Abortion also threatens the life of the woman. Abortion involves taking medication and in other cases, it may involve surgery. Either way, the reproductive system of the woman is affected since the pills or the surgical process interferes with the reproductive nature of a woman. Cases of surgery may lead to bleeding, which may result in complicated cases or death where cases become severe. The pills on the other hand can affect the woman’s reproductive system, hindering them from having children in the future.

A group of the pro-life movements argues that abortion is a plot by men who want to have sex without having the responsibility of taking care of the children. They see it as a strategy for men to oppress women since abortion will give men complete sexual freedom. The risk of pregnancy discourages many men from having sex as most of them are unwilling to take the responsibility of taking care of children. However, abortion gives them the liberty to have sex as they wish since it is an alternative to pregnancy. For this reason, the pro-life movement’s decision against abortion is also a strategy that empowers women and encourages men to consent to pregnancy when having sex.

Pro-life vs. Pro-abortion Conclusion

The debate between pro-life and pro-choice is hotly debated in the United States. The Pro-choice movement has had its share of victories since 1973. However, pro-life is gaining momentum in modern times as the dangers of abortion to women and society are becoming more visible. More people against abortion are coming out and more pro-life campaigns are held in schools and across the country to educate people on the dangers of abortion. In the near future right to decide what to do with pregnancy might be overturned.
