Jessica Smith Biography

Jessica Smith is one of those our researchers discovered.  Smith is a passionate storyteller working as a weather anchor for CTV Toronto. She is also a reporter and segment producer. Prior to working at her current position, Jess worked at CTV Kitchener and CTV Regina. Read on to see her journey to be a regular figure on TV.

Jessica Smith was born in Canada’s capital, Toronto in 1986 August, 28. She will be celebrating her 36th birthday in 2022. Smith comes from a supportive family who has held and supported her all the way.

However, her career is her primary priority. She has placed marriage, relationships, and thoughts about a husband secondary as she looks forward to sharpening her journalism skills. However, she has a dog for the company during her days off work.

Jessica knew from a young age that education would play a major role in her career. She went to Mayfield Secondary School for the Performing Arts where she did a diploma in Arts and majored in Drama.

Her experience in school gave her the confidence to perform in front of big crowds. After graduating from high school she joined Guelph Humber University where she did Media Studies and majored in Journalism. She graduated in 2008.

Jessica Smith Career

After graduating from college, she became the cheerleader, community ambassador, and social media manager for Toronto Argonauts Football Club for 9 seasons, leading the team in 6.

Jess’ journalism career started in June 2009 when she worked as a reporter and writer for Rogers TV. After two years, she left and joined Shaw Communication as a Global Promo Scheduler where she produced news and scheduled national campaigns.

In 2013, she joined Beat The Traffic, a subsidiary of The Weather Network, as a presenter and desk operator who provided traffic updates. She joined the parent company as a weather specialist, a skill that got her hired at RaceCanada before joining CTV News.

She started at CTV News as a video journalist and Weather Anchor at CTV Regina where she created, edited and wrote weather stories. At Regina, she covered Alida Tornado and news on the Morning Live Team.

In 2019, Jess was recognized by Praire Dig Best as the Best TV Weather Person. Smith later joined CTV Kitchener as a Reporter and Weather Anchor, a position she held for 1 year and 6 months.

In December 2021, she joined CTV Toronto as a Segment producer and weather specialist. CP24 Breaking News later hired her as a weather forecaster in June 2023.

Other than doing weather, Jessica has participated in covering stories that have a positive impact on the community. She recently covered a story of a young boy who was recruited into the police training program after he saved his mother‘s life. She also did another report where a vaccine clinic reported using therapy dogs for easing anxiety for kids.

Jessica has proved her value throughout her journey as a weather specialist and producer. She has had multiple promotions during her time at CTV, making her one of the highest-paid weather forecasters. She earns approximately $80,000 per year. Her physical attributes are also in question among her followers.

She is among the black female reporters in Canada who have embraced natural hair, curly hair, and afro in place of straight hair as tradition commands. This confidence has played a huge role in encouraging black Canadian women to appreciate their natural hair. Her decision to appear with natural hair was received with criticism and love. She responded to one critic by saying

Got this comment during the show today. Black hair is beautiful/professional. My hair is beautiful/professional. I didn’t/won’t engage this person. Just because something is different, doesn’t make it ‘silly’. I share to help educate.
