Education
The dream to become a journalist was shaped when she joined. Hampton University to pursue a degree in Broadcast Journalism. She served as the Vice President of Hampton University, became a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and a mentor at the Q.U.E.E.N. program.
Ashley was also the staff writer of The Hampton Scripts. She did research and wrote over 20 news articles and assisted editors with weekly publications. Ashley was also the News correspondent at WHOV TV News, a student TV at Hampton University. She was tasked with anchoring newscasts, conducting interviews, and writing packages.
Her obsession with journalism led to job and internship opportunities while she was still a student. Ashley worked as an on-air personality at WARR 1529AM Radio station where she did interviews, created social medial media content, and delivered live events on engaging topics and national news.
Hendricks became an intern at The News and Observer. She wrote and pitched newsworthy stories, and followed up on news and news interviews with local celebrities, politicians, and community members. The journalist later joined The Odyssey Online as a Contributing writer who wrote and published several articles, and researched facts and statistics to support the content she created. Hendricks also interned for 1 month at iHeartmedia, co-producing show line-ups, doing live interviews, publishing content on blogs, and setting up equipment for live remotes.
Career
After school, Hendrick got her first employment at iHeartMedia as a promotions assistant who published content for social media, produced ads, and wrote and reported engaging stories.
She went on screen as a journalist for the first time at WRAL as a news production assistant. She liaised with producers and reporters to curate good stories, produced entertainment segments, and assisted reporters during interviews.
After 9 months, she got a job with Nexstar Media Group as a morning anchor and reporter for News 13. She did live reports 10 to 15 times a day, wrote and published articles daily, and did packages for weekday morning newscasts. After 8 months, she was promoted to weekend morning anchor and reporter. February 26, 2022, she joined NBC 12 News as a weekend morning and weekday reporter.
In her time as a journalist, Ashley has demonstrated resiliency as she got her promotion at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. She has covered stories on the impact of the pandemic, presidential visits, elections, and crime in South Carolina. Recently, she has been involved with covering devasting stories like the impact of Hurricane Ian and positive stories such as the launch of the Marcus Alert program that is aimed at responding to mental health emergencies.
