Education and Service in the Corporate World
Growing up in a progressive family led Tenicka to join Tennessee State University where she was pursuing a degree in Mass Communication and Media Studies. Later she went on to further her studies at the University of Michigan for a master’s degree in public policy.
With her academic credentials, she joined the workforce in the social welfare sector. Her first job was as a Lead organizer for Flint Area Congregations. In 2008, she was among the first beneficiary when Obama won the elections. She worked for the administration for 1 year as a field organizer, then as an assistant director of the US Interagency Council on Homeless for 2 years, and finally as a special assistant in the Department of Education.
After Obama’s first term as president, Tenicka joined Parent Organizing Organization as a senior director for 5 years and later as a national director of Leader of Color Initiative.
In 2020, she became a national organizing director and a deputy political director for a non-profit called ACLU. Her responsibility in this organization later changed when she experience social injustice firsthand during and after the death of George Floyd. Protests, demonstrations, and campaigns that followed displayed a unity Tenicka had never seen. From that experience, she made a decision to join in to fight for social justice for the black community.
