She went to Thoman G Pullen High School in Maryland where she got an opportunity to experience art. This spared a desire to be a singer or an actress. However, her passion changed when she joined Eleanor Roosevelt High School.
Law became her goal, leading her to intern at the federal courthouse and the county courthouse. Through the opportunities she interned, Turner got an experience in journalism and fell in love with it. Journalism did not make sense until she joined Rutgers University where she decided to do major in journalism and media studies and a minor in Japanese.
In journalism was hidden a gem she knew nothing off. Storytelling came naturally to her. Turner realized she loved being in front of the camera, lights, and attention. All these brought her true identity.
Having an experience in journalism sparked a great interest that neither school work nor internship opportunities bothered her. All were walk-overs.

Mikea Turner Career
Her passion for journalism led her to an internship opportunity at WUSA9. There, her responsibilities were researching information for reporters’ stories, shooting on the field, and writing material for the entertainment segment oh My Goff. She interned at The Insider where she researched entertainment material and aided in the production of interviews and morning shows.
After graduating, Turner was certain of getting a job but the opportunities were slimmer than she thought. Regardless, she opted to volunteer at Prince George’s Community Television. Here, she got exposed to the real world of journalism.
It motivated her to work as a freelancer. After a few months, an opportunity came knocking and Turner took it without second guessing. She became a general assignment reporter at Prince George’s Community and also had an opportunity to launch her own show called Inspirational Moments with Mikea.
Another opportunity came and Turner found herself as a video journalist, Fill-in Producer, and Fill-in anchor for WBOC-TV. After two years of occupying this position, the organization promoted her to Morning Live Reporter, Fill-in anchor, and Meteorologist.
Her breakthrough moment came in 2016 when she was called to work at WUSA-TV as a weekend Morning Anchor, Reporter, and Fill-in Traffic Anchor. Here, her work was immediately recognized as she was nominated for the Emmy for a feature story.
Working hard made her a highly sought-after journalist. In January 2021, she announced he departure from WUSA after five years. She joined NBC12 as an anchor. There, she wore many hats.
Turner wrote stories, edited scripts, emceed events, and anchored 5.6.7.10.11 shows. She also learned copy editing, social media blogging, video editing, and other journalism skills.
During Black History Month, Mikea covered the story of Mary Lumpkin, an enslaved woman who transformed one of the greatest slavery lands into Virginia Union University, which has been a place for change and growth to many African Americans.
