The Pocket Queen Biography
I don’t know about you but I find drums to be at the core of songs. I mean, would you nod your head when a guitar is playing? That’s right! You wouldn’t. I am not downplaying a guitar or any other musical instrument, but am kinda interested in drums more. I am sure Taylor Gordon, 33, professionally known as The Pocket Queen would be pleased with my opinion.
This article is about her. Playing the drum was only a vision she fantasized about. But Taylor did not know she would play drums for a living. The Pocket Queen is now a professional drummer who has had the privilege of playing for international acts such as Fifth Harmony and Beyonce.
The Pocket Queen Age, Family, and Relationship
She is a New Orleans native born on 16th July 1990. Taylor comes from a Christian background. Her motto in life is putting God first followed by family and lastly music. Taylor has religiously stuck to her priority acknowledging the presence of God in her moves.
She also comes from a family of strong women as her mother was the CEO of her own company and her big sister was a medical practitioner. Her music is still her current priority over having a family of her own. Until she is a leader, Taylor will put her career in music as her priority over having a husband and children.
The Pocket Queen Education and Music
When Taylor’s Dad bought his 2-year-old an old Fisher Price drum set, he was glad she loved the toy. To Taylor, the toy was something more serious. It was the first time she would be playing a drum set.
At age 7, Taylor had already gathered the courage to play in front of the church audience. The experience taught her to listen to the audience and respond to their demands. The excitement stemming from her passion for playing drums stirred a desire to study it at one of the best music schools, Berklee College.
Her mother, who could not afford to educate her at Berkle, almost discouraged Taylor but she held on to her faith and later boarded her mother on it despite her initial decision.
Time and chance favored her when Berklee announced an audition at Dallas. The challenge, this time, was doing her best because she learned of the audition one-day before the deadline. When it was her time to present, the pocket queen bossed up with her exceptional drumming skills and personality. At the end of the audition, Taylor was among the 7 selected for the presidential scholarship to Berklee.
At school, her focus was primarily on getting better at her skills. Getting better at it she did without a doubt. Her skills earned her praise from musicians and experts such as Anita Baker, Patrice Rushen, and Michael Bearden.
Although the school was good, she disliked how other trainees did their practice sessions. Taylor saw no sense in practicing at night time hoping others would not listen to what was played. She opted to take a different path. She started Road to Chops, a YouTube Channel where she would allow people to see how she progressed as a drummer.
The Pocket Queen Outside Berklee
By the end of 2010, she had done 10 videos. Two years later, Taylor moved to Los Angeles after graduating. In her new home, Taylor met and played with stars like Rober Glasper and Steve Wonder. Like most artists, her breakthrough came from a corner she least expected it.
Taylor was having lunch in Chick-fil-A when a man called her by her name. The man told her about her Road to Chops videos and asked her for her number. Gordon quickly gave it to him when he introduced himself as Derek Dixie, Beyonce’s music director.
One year later, Derek’s calls came through, again when she least expected it. He requested her to play for a big event. The big event turned out to be Super Bowl. The man had selected Tayalor to join other drumists Anne Miller, Joy Williman, and others in playing Beyonce’s formation.
The experience with Beyonce taught her about presenting herself, something she started practicing on her own. Her dreams soon paid off when her videos on Instagram and Facebook went viral getting over 100,000 views on Insta and 1 million on Fb.
One viral video ushered her to a new world that forever changed her identity. The video attracted artists and music stars who invited her for tours. Now, she is in demand.
In 2021, she decide to soar higher. The Pocket Queen released her first EP called Groove Theory Volume 1 on her 16th Birthday. During the release of the EP, Taylor stated that the 5-song EP displayed a new awakening and her healing process from negative self-belief.
