Marielena Balouris Biography
Her mom saw a journalist in Marielena Balouris, 29, when she was in fifth grade. She didn’t agree. Fast forward, 20 years, later, Balouris is living her mother’s prophecy. Marielena currently works as an evening anchor at WAVY-TV. She has grown to be an expert in her job after spending months in WTAJ and as an intern at WTOV 9.

She comes from a close-knitted family of her father, mother, Kathy Balouris, and brothers, Antonio Balouris and Yanni Balouris. She grew to value family and purposed to start her own. Becoming a journalist was never in her dreams until her mother put a seed in her mind. The seed became an obsession and later and desire to accomplish. She went to North Allegheny Senior High School, graduated, and later joined Penn State University where she studied broadcast journalism and political science. She participated in activities that contributed to the person she would be in the future.
The aspiring journalist worked part-time as a reporter, Anchor, and Morning Show host for ComRadio. She served there for 1 year and 4 months before quitting to start an internship opportunity she found at NewsRadio 1020 KDKA in Greater Pittsburgh Area. In 2013, she interned at WJLA for 3 months. In all her internship opportunities, she learned to shoot, edit and write newscasts. She also actively participated in on-field reporting and liaising with other reporters on ways to make news.

She got her first employment opportunity at WTAJ-TV as a reporter, anchor, producer, and multimedia journalist. Her duties were producing and anchoring the weekend evening newscast. During the weekdays she served as a reporter. This experience taught her to create engaging content with the station’s audience and work with people outside the studio to create genuine news. She also advanced her writing skills.
In 2016, she got her breakthrough opportunity. She joined WAVY-TV as an evening anchor and a special project reporter. She has been instrumental in the growth and competitiveness of the stations as she is passionate about delivering results. One of her toughest and most rewarding coverage was when she did Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics in Beijing 2022. Other stories she has covered are ruling against Antoine Legrande Jr., the Brazilian 2022 election results, the Elon Musk Twitter acquisition, and many other stories. She was recognized in the greek American Forty Under 40 class of 2020 and also won an Emmy award.
