He was born on 29th January 1993 in Guaymas, Mexico. At age 5, his family moved to the United States because his father was working for Ford, which transferred to the USA. Miguel’s mother was working in the finance sector. The journalist is the firstborn son in a family of 3 boys. His brothers are Gabriel and Michael. Unlike his family, Miguel has taken a different route. He identifies as gay as he is attracted to men. He is in a relationship with Raymond Smeriglio. According to his Instagram, the two have been dating for some time now.
In an interview with Philadelphia Gay News, Miguel confessed that he knew he was attracted to men from a young age. As a child, he would play with his girl cousins instead of playing soccer with the boys. His father and mother knew he was gay when they found a love letter from his boyfriend when he was in high school. Miguel’s parents accepted him the way he was and were supportive of him. Since then, Miguel has never hidden who he is. He is now open to the world and encourages other gays to come out.
Education and Career
His passion to become a journalist started in middle school when he did announcements on loudspeakers. It sparked a desire to become an anchor. In High School, he joined TV classes and served as the main anchor for the school’s news. The dream continued becoming more real when he joined Michigan State University where he was involved in the school media, Focal Point MSU, as a News Reporter. As a student, Miguel interned at Univision Communications Inc and as a reporter for HOMTV 21.
At college, he minored in Spanish and spoke it while at home as it was mandatory. Speaking fluently in Spanish later helped him when he was an MMJ at Entravision communications and a Spanish language reporter. He worked there for 6 months and joined FOX Vegas for 2 years. In 2017 he joined NBC News as a bilingual reporter for NBC and Telemundo.
Since beginning his career, Martinez has been covering news in Philadelphia both in English and Spanish. He has covered the story of a Woman in Philly who found herself in jail after Police mistook her for another woman. He has also done the story of Jerry Blavant and his impact on music. He did an interview with Mayor Jim Kenney who announced preventing Gun violence as his top priority in his last term. Miguel has also covered a series of shootings and crimes which have been frequent around Philly. Some of his major coverages are elections in 2020 and the impact of Covid-19.
