Karys Belger is a multi-skilled journalist working for 11Alive as an anchor and reporter. Before 11 Alive, she worked full-time as a reporter for WGRZ-TV, in Buffalo, New York. She has interviewed prominent individuals such as Eric Nam, an American, Singer and Television host of Korean descent.
Karys Belger Background
Karys Belger’s age is late twenties or early thirties. Her passion for journalism started at an early age and her parent participated in building it since they were TV junkies. She was born and raised in the D.C. Metro area where she experienced the impact of the 9/11 attack and the Beltway Sniper shootings. These events started a desire to want to understand what was happening around her. From there she began engaging in activities that would prepare her for journalism.
Karys Belger Education
Karys learned from an early age that education would be vital in her pursuit of journalism. She joined high school with a tunnel vision of becoming a successful journalist. At school, Belger participated in writing the high school newspaper and reading the morning announcements.
She went to the Queen Mary University of London where she studied English and Theatre for one month. After high school, Belger joined Spelman College where she studied Bachelor of Arts in English and Drama. At college, she participated in activities and societies such as publishing The Blueprint News Paper, The Maroon Tiger, Spelman Dance Theater, and Feminist Majority.
After graduating from Spelman, Karys felt the training was not enough for her career. She enrolled at Northwestern University for a master’s degree in journalism. It was at Northwestern that she started working in environments that were similar to a newsroom.
Karys Belger Career
Karys has volunteered and participated in activities that led her to the positions she currently occupies. At Spelman College, she worked as an Editor in Chief at Odyssey. She supervised publications of the daily news and developed diverse voices in the school using the online platform.
Still at Spelman, Belger joined The Maroon Tiger Student Media Group where she was the Staff Writer and Brand Ambassador. Real work started at the Sightline Media Group where she worked as a video intern in the military times magazine. After three months, she joined Medill News Svc as a multimedia journalist.
Karys participated as a Capital Hill Reporter in the Washington Program. She covered the legislation in Congress, established media partners, and pitched stories to television networks. In September 2017, the young journalist started working at WFTX FOX 4 as a multimedia journalist investigating, pitching, and reporting exclusive news on survivors of human trafficking and the sex slave trade.
She also did exclusive reports on the effects of opioids on the population of Southwest Florida. In October 2018, she left Fox for WGRX where she joined as a Multiskilled journalist who covered breaking and exclusive stories. Other than reporting, Karys produced digital-first content to increase website visibility and created content for midday and evening newscasts.
