Kalilah Wright Biography

Kalilah Wright,36, is an American entrepreneur, designer, and architect. She is the founder of MESS in a bottle brand, a company that manufactures t-shirts, bags, mugs, and other items which come packaged with a reusable bottle. The apparel carries an appealing message sent to others.  The message in the apparel is about protecting inner peace, overcoming doubts, and sometimes funny messages about anything. Besides entrepreneurship, Wright is a professional architect and designer. She has had previous experience working in L2M Architects, Basuhail Architects, and as an intern at Capp Architects and Urban Designers.

She was born on 23rd February 1986 in Kingston Jamaica. However, she traveled to the United States at age 4 and settled in Brooklyn where she grew up. In an interview, Wright confessed that her grandparents have played an important role in making her who she is today. On matters of relationship, Kalilah is currently single. However, she is a mother to a 9-year-old son got a previous marriage, which ended in divorce.

By age 12, Kalilah had already displayed business acumen. However, it never occurred to her that she would become one in the future. Her passion was architecture. The dream began when she was in Philippa Schuyler and later at Pennsylvania State University where she studied BA in Art and Architecture. She graduated in 2005 and went back to further her studies at Morgan State University where she did a master’s in Architecture.

After graduating from Penn State, Kalilah got an opportunity at CSD Architect where she was a junior architect responsible for working with projects manager and senior architects to create designs for projects. After 9 months, she joined Gapp Architects and Urban Designers as an Urabm designer who assisted in planning the city of Cape Town in South Africa. Using Photoshop and InDesign she created graphic presentations to present her designs to clients. Wright later got an opportunity to work at Schwinghammer Lighting as a Lighting Designer who designed lighting layouts for major areas such as Dallas, Michael Kors, and California using AutoCAD.

In 2008, RCG called her for an employment opportunity as a junior architect where she did floor plans, elevations, and door schedules alongside printing and compiling documents and presentations. The experience she had earned her an opportunity at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute where she was a design teacher teaching juniors in High school, providing mentorship to students, and distributing scholarship programs such as the Women in Construction Scholarship and Architecture Construction and Engineering Program. She later got a lucrative opportunity at Under Amour as a Designer for Global Environments where she surveyed spaces and created interior and exterior fitting that would suit the space She created them in 2D and 3D renders for presentation to clients.

Although Kalilah was working in a job many admired, she never felt the satisfaction she needed. Many times, the architect felt she could do something more. She got the inspiration of starting a MESS in the bottle after listening to Chance the Rapper’s album Surf, whose album photo was a bottle with a message in it. She created the brand and purposed to make it big. Kalilah, however, went through a discouraging time when her newly found shop was broken into and robbed at gunpoint. She created a video online lamenting the incident. The video went viral attracting thousands of people who later supported her. From there, her brand became popular.

Kalilah chose to chase her dreams despite making a lot of money as an architect. Mess in a bottle now makes more than she earned. Her net worth could be approximately $5 million.
