Shannelle Kaul Biography

I’ve written many biographies about people of color in the media industry. A common challenge among them is discrimination because of their skin color. Those who made it to top positions had to have relentless determination, a thick skin, and a good heart. Shannelle Kaul experienced all of these but it never deterred her from becoming what she wanted. Now, she serves as a reporter and anchor at CP24 Toronto. She is also a journalism instructor and a pianist.

Her passion for journalism stemmed from her background story. She was born on 14th December 1990 in India. Her parent relocated to Canada to escape the Gulf War. In Canada, Shannelle found a space where she could thrive. She also met Austin Lustig who later became her husband.

Education

Kaul grew up watching and desiring to be on television. This passion followed her even as she grew up. She joined Ryerson University where she pursued a degree in Broadcast Journalism. She was actively involved in the skating team and a part of The Ryersonian, the school’s newspaper.

In her sophomore, she joined SheDoesTheCity.com as an intern tasked with writing trending news, interviewing, and doing photography. She also volunteered in Rogers Communications to work as a teleprompter controller and camera operator.

Still, in Rogers Communication, she worked for Flare Magazine as an intern responsible for transcribing interviews, writing entertainment blogs, and researching news. The company later promoted her to a reporter.

Career

Immediately After graduating, she joined Global News as an assignment coordinator and editorial assistant asked with doing daily stories, researching local breaking news, and booking interviews. After 1 and a half years, she was promoted to weekend anchor and later to morning news anchor. After 3 years in Global News, she relocated to Edmonton to serve as a reporter and Weekend anchor for CTV news.

Here she pitched stories, produced newscasts, and did live reports. Kaul worked for 2 years before joining CP24 where she currently works as a reporter and anchor. She delivers breaking news and does in-depth reports. She also fills in for the national morning show.

Her pursuit to become a regular figure on TV did not come easy. She faced microaggression because of her skin color. Shannelle many times found herself confused as some people thought she was too white while others thought she was too brown. She also received backlash on the internet because of minor things like the pronunciation of some words or her hairstyle.

Regardless, Kaul is one of the most respected young women journalists in Canada. She commands influence many aspiring journalists as she also works as a journalism instructor at Ryerson University.

2023 started on a high note for the journalist. She joined CBS News as New York Based correspondent for CBS, CBS News Radio, and Newspath. In her time at CBS, she has covered 5 different airplane crashes across the country, the death sentencing of Robert Bowers, who killed 11 Jewish worshippers at Tree of Life Synagogue, and a report on the lack of diversity in sperm banks.
