Things got better for her when she met Daniel Amen, a professional psychiatrist, who later became her husband. Tana Amen now lives a mentally healthy life. She grew up in an extremely poor background because her mother was a 16-year-old high school dropout. She had difficult time providing for the family’s needs. Seeing the status of the family, Tana’s father abandoned his family, became a Baptist minister, remarried, and had other children.
Being abandoned by her father affected how she viewed life and God. Her struggle for acceptance led Tana to do drugs. Her mother remarried a man who later molested Tana when she was 12 years old. She was again assaulted as a child on her way to school. These painful experiences led her to go deeper into drugs to avoid dealing with the emotions.

Her young adult life also comprised many mental challenges. Numbing her problems led to an eating disorder and severe depression. She also developed thyroid cancer, which caused her to quit her job and drop her studies. When she thought her life was at the tail end, a moment of breakthrough came.
Her uncle who had struggled with heroin addiction for years changed and started teaching motivational seminars. He gave Tana the idea of taking responsibility for her life in areas where she had control. This idea completely changed the life of Tana.
She became intentional with what she could not and ignored the areas that were beyond her. This new mindset saw her helping people she never thought she could help. In the process, her mental health began healing.
She joined a church and met people doing well in their mental health. Tana started learning about the character of God and what He promised to people who love Him. She renewed her faith in Jesus and started living a Christian life.
Her mental issues, however, resurfaced when she divorced the father of her child Chloe. Struggling to come to terms with her ex and custody caused problems for her mental health. She found peace and acceptance after she met Dr. Daniel Amen. She opened up her life to him and her childhood experience. With love and appreciation, Mr. Daniel accepted him as she was.
