Saphia Khambalia Biography

With more than 15 years of experience in the world of journalism, the masses can describe Saphia Khambalia as an excellent communicator and a dynamic journalist with skills extending from writing articles, to hosting, doing interviews, and live shows. She is currently working as a part-time on-air host, public speaker, content creator, and communications and public relations. Saphia serves full-time as a weather anchor and reporter. She has previously served at City News and CBC.

Personal Details, Family and Husband

Saphia Khambalia is a 36-year-old first-generation immigrant raised in Hamilton, Canada. She is of Indian and of East African descent as her grandparents were among the Indians who moved to East Africa to build the railway. Saphia Khambalia wrote in an article about how her parents forcefully moved from Uganda to Canada after President Idi Amin declared death to all South Asians who lived in Uganda. The family later moved to Canada where they got accepted and started rebuilding their lives.

It is in Canada where Saphia built a life different from her parents and grandparents’ life but with similar virtues of life and relationships. Saphia also tells in another article about her grandparents ‘ old marriage and how they died 24 hours apart.

As an adult now, Saphia desired to have something similar to her family. She got married to her lover and friend Ivan, whose descent is Croatian. The two met in a grocery store, a chemistry got sparked and soon they were in a relationship.

The couple had two separate weddings to honor their different cultures. They did an Indian wedding for Saphia and a traditional Muslim Nikaah ceremony for her husband. The couple have now been blessed with three children.

Education and Career

The passion to be in media started in her childhood. Saphia remembers using the high brush as a microphone and participating in the school newspaper while in High School. The dream started becoming a reality when she joined Toronto Metropolitan University.

She got her skills up to work immediately after graduation. Saphia Khambalia started working as National Sports Host and Videographer for CBC where she had the opportunity to report the 2010 World Cup Coverage. She worked there for two years before moving to City News where she was a reporter and anchor doing major stories on culture, entertainment, politics, and life.

As a general assignment reporter, Saphia Khambalia got a knack for the weather because of its impact on people in Canada. In 2015 she became the main anchor and weather reporter for The Weather Network, a position she has held up to date.

As a weather specialist, Saphia has at one time covered the impact of Hurricane Fiona and the possibility of it happening again. She also did an interesting story on how a young lady raised $2 million to encourage other young people to fight climate change. The charismatic journalist also had the opportunity to tell the story of Catherine McKenna, a former minister of climate and a pro-climate enthusiast.

While not in her official duties, Saphia is serving as a spokesperson for Parkinson Canada, an NGO that has interest in protecting the lives of South Asians living in Canada. She participates in community and charity organizations even in her mother country Uganda. Her passion for weather and people has also been seen by other dynamic journalists like Jessica Smith and Ross Hull.
