Her decision to do gospel music has been rooted in her upbringing and knowledge of the Lord Jesus. In her career as a musician, she has been able to release Grammy and Stella award-winning songs and shared the stage with international musicians like Erica Campbell and Tye Tribbet.

She was born on 6th January 1982 in San Leandro and was raised in Oakland. Lena Byrd Miles is the eldest sibling in a family of three girls. She was raised in a deeply rooted Christian family. Her grandparents Lady Gussie and Pastor Milton Starks were head pastors at New Hope Church of God in Christ in Oakland. Her father was a bass player and her mother was an organist in the church’s choir. As she grew up, Lena not only followed her parent’s passion for music but also their virtues and beliefs. She got married to her love Tobi Miles an entrepreneur and pianist. Despite being married for a long time, Lena and Tobi are yet to have a child.
Education and Career in Music
Although she had a passion for music as a child, she had to follow the education route. She started at Grass Valley Elementary School, all the way to Oakland Technical High School, and finally to Chabot College where she studied Cosmetology.
After graduating, she focused on her career as a singer, songwriter, and worship leader. Before hitting the stage with her music, she was a background musician for the legend Edwin Hawkins until his demise in 2018 and in the DMX Homecoming Choir.
Under the tutelage of some of Hawking, she started making a name for herself as a vocalist. She got invited to sing at churches, schools, and events. In 2023, she sang the national anthem at the Chase Center before the Golden State Warriors game. One of her songs also made it for consideration during the Dove Award Ceremony.
Influence and Awards
Late in 2022, she released her debut album, Brand New, which featured 11 powerful singles. From the Album the single WOW (Walk on Water) climbed to the top spot on the Billboard Gospel Airplay Chart. The single became her third entry in the chart after This is the Day and Promises. At the 37th Annual Stellar Awards, Lena Byrd Miles and her team at My Block Records were named the Best New Artist, making 2023 her most successful year. She also joined gospel legend musician Erica Campbell as a special guest on her Feel Alright Tour.
She has been able to balance being a wife, daughter cosmetologist, and her music career, making her a force to be reckoned with. Lena has carried her parents and grandparent’s passion for the gospel. Unlike her parents, her way of spreading the gospel is through leading worship and making music like influential worship ministers Cristabel Clack and Isabel Davis.
