Cynthia Ugochi Iloka Biography

Africans are moving to the United States because it is the land of opportunities. Although many struggle to find their way into the free country, many have stabilized themselves and had an opportunity to thrive. Cynthia Ugochi Iloka is a celebrated and award-winning journalist currently working for KHOU as an anchor and reporter. She is not an anchor because she is an immigrant but because she is an expert at anchoring, shooting, and writing. Ugochi has had previous experience working in  Fox6, KHBS, and CD3 Media.

Personal Details

Her journey began in Nigeria on 22nd January 1989 when she was born. While in middle school she moved to Houston, United States. She joined Kempner High School and later joined Sam Houston State University for a course in Mass Communication and a minor in political science. As a student, she put her skill into practice by producing news for the local block, and anchoring and reporting for the school’s TV station Huntsville News 7.

As she was pursuing her career, she met a man and together they started a relationship that led to the birth of her daughter Skylar Oluchi. Due to their difference, the two separated and resorted to co-parenting.

Cynthia Ugochi Iloka Career in Media

Her experience outside school started at KRIV Fox 26 where she was an intern learning to do interviews and pitching stories. She got her first big job at CD3 Media as a freelancer tasked to do writing, shooting, hosting, and editing content. She had her own short News segment called Right Under Your Nose.

Her breakthrough came in 2013 when she joined TV 40 as a dayside and morning reporter. She covered big stories like the Train Crash that killed 40 people, a 3 hunt for a man, an investigation of parents who raped and killed their 6-year-old boy and she had an interview with the first same-sex couples in Arkansas.

After 3 years, she moved to Tuscaloosa to work for WBRC FOX6 News as an anchor and reporter. While in Fox she had an opportunity to interview Alabama Governor Robert Bentler who was found guilty of violations of campaign ethics.  Cynthia Ugochi Iloka has had the privilege to interview Alice Johnson who was granted freedom after 21 years of her life imprisonment. Apart from her reporting skills, Ugochi also created content on social media to keep her presence on social media felt.

In 2021, she moved back to her hometown to serve at KHOU as a news reporter. At KHOU, Ugochi has covered the history of Black Catholic Churches, and the rise of KenTheMan as Houston’s latest musician on the rise.

Outside Work

While she has achieved success on American soil, Ugochi Iloka does not forget her roots. She regularly celebrates her Nigerian heritage alongside other Nigerians living in the United States. She is also an inspiration to black women living in the country and Africans dreaming of moving and working in America. Other Africans who moved and thrived in America are Nicky Zizaza moved from Rwanda and Rachel Mbuki an immigrant from Kenya.
