Donna Adja Biography

Right now it is virtually impossible to ignore music from Nigeria. The rise of young, talented, and promising artists has stiffened the competition and improved the quality of music. One of the promising and fast-rising artists is Donna Adja. She is more than a musician. Donna is also an actress, fashion designer, and producer. Her music cuts across, afro beats, RnB and Hip Hop, making her internship wide and broad. Her way to becoming a popular musician came with many challenges but she encountered all of them.

Her real name is Donna Ogheneyerowo Adja. She was born on 26th June 1984 in Delta State. Like most Africans, she was born in a Christian background. Her Urhobo name means “God answers prayers”. She went to school in Baptist High School and later to Obafemi Awolowo University where she did a degree in Business Management. Although she followed the traditional route of education, her attention later turned to her passion for music. Excelling in music has been her desire, she has kept matters of marriage, having a husband, and children as a secondary priority.

Music Career

Her passion for music started when she was young. In her teenagehood, Donna served as a member of the choir for her church. Before turning to music, she tried her hand at acting. Donna did minor roles in films like Together as One and Golden Mask. Frustrations and slow progress in the film industry led her to begin her career in music, where she felt her voice would be heard.

She started working for Sheraton Hotel as the leader of an in-house band. Donna worked there for 5 years before beginning her solo career. She started her group called the Sugarband which did special performances for public figures like Olusegun Obasanjo the former President of Nigeria. She also traveled overseas to perform for big events and birthday parties.

Her experience as a musician in Nigeria was coupled with controversies. Many times she was a victim of body shaming because of her petite physical attributes. Donna also complained of sexual harassment in the music industry.

Donna has also attracted criticism her way. Her song video, Gaga was banned by the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission due to its erotic scenes. Donna told the Pm News Nigeria that she had spent 5 Million Naira for the video.

She explained that the erotic scenes in the video were a display of her femininity since many people thought of her as a tomboy.

Donna Adja Overseas Career and Success.

Like her experience, while acting, Donna also had frustrating moments as a musician. Piracy and dishonest people undermined the value of her hard work. She relocated to Los Angeles where she re-shaped her career.

While in LA, she has improved her music and production skills. She has released hit songs like Prayer, fit in my shoes, and Ganja. Her song Ganja has people talking She has displayed, talent and the potential of becoming a star.

In Nigeria, Donna is competing with the likes Simi and Yemi Alade. In the United States, she is competing for listenership with GoGo Morrow. Donna is also behind the dressing designs on her music. She is passionate about dressing that embraces femininity. Her physical attributes also fit modern African designs. Donna’s height is 5 feet and 6 inches and she could be weighing 59kgs.
