HannahJoy Gebreselassie Biography

With the journalism skills you learn in college, you can choose to work for a media station or start your own station. Hannah Joy Gebresilassie started as a sports reporter, anchor, and general assignment reporter and worked at various media stations but later quit to pursue her passion as a social entrepreneur.

Now, she is the founder of HannahJoy TV, and Promote Positivity movement. Her platforms are geared towards creating uplifting and positive content from people around the world. More of her personal and professional details are below.

She is a first-generation Ethiopia Eritrean American born on 10th November 1990 to parents who came to America as refugees. She was raised in Metro Atlanta along with her siblings.

The family grew up following the Orthodox Christian faith, which she still follows in her adulthood. In matters regarding marriage, sources confirm that Hannah is single and childless. Her focus as of writing this article is her social enterprise.

Career and Education

Growing up, Hannah Joy had an innate desire to connect with people. This passion led her to do a master’s in journalism at Northwestern University after doing two Business administration degrees at Georgia State University and Georgia Institute of Technology.

Hannah Joy learned early in life to provide for herself. She worked part-time as a technician assistant and a restaurant server while still chasing assignment deadlines and classes. Hannah Joy had her first glimpse of journalism when she worked for the Atlanta Falcons as a Game Day Operations staff who assisted in entertaining the audience during halftime performances.

She executed high-profile entertainment for guests like Nivea, Ludacris, and Falcons Cheerleaders. At the same time, Hanna was a women’s basketball team head student manager at the Georgia Tech Athletic Association where she assisted in filming, recording, and producing foreign tour blogs. She had the opportunity of traveling with coaches, players, and the Director of Operations.

The organization later gave Hannah an opportunity to work as a Radio Analyst who provided radio coverage, interviewed, and traveled with teams.

This experience gave her the desire to look into more on serving people. It led her to do a master’s in journalism in order to learn more about the art. She got her opportunity as a journalist at FOX 5 Atlanta where she was a trainee for 7 months. Hannah later moved to Greater Atlanta where she became a content creator and a team reporter for Atlanta Dream. In 2017, she got an opportunity to work as an anchor and reporter for WSIL TV.

As a journalist, she realized a gap and decided to capitalize on it. In 2018, she took a leap of faith quit her job, left a steady paycheck, healthy benefits, and a cozy apartment at the cost of chasing her dreams. She went back to her mother, and did odd jobs like washing dishes and being a nanny to fund her new business, HannahJoyTv.

Her transparency and ability to relate to other people had her business gradually rising. Now 5 years into the business, Hannah Joy Tv has spread its wings across the United States. The station has been a source of inspiring content from doing interviews with influential people and covering positive events happening across the world.

To her idea of spreading positive content, Hannah added a community organization that has been promoting positivity by honoring people who have been building the society, remembering people who did well for society, commenting on social issues, and organizing events that promote social welfare.

The brand behind the community organization is 4 hearts colored green, yellow, red, and blue which represent the Ethiopian and Eritrean Flag. She sells merchandise printed with the brand. 10 percent of the profits go to organizations that support youth activities.

Investing in the welfare of the community landed her an opportunity as an executive director of Protect the Vote GA, which she co-founded in 2021, and as a Senior Program Coordinator for Emory Votes Initiative at Emory University. With the two organizations, Hannah has been assisting the government in encouraging the community to be active in civil matters and increasing voter turnout during elections.

Her ability to influence the community earned her the opportunity to speak and emcee events. She was a keynote speaker for the 100th-year celebration of Northwestern Medill School. Hannah is also a champion of Black Lives Matter.

The public figure is also known for her public admiration of her Ethiopian and Eritrea roots. She follows the Julian Calender like Christians in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Hannah also dresses in the Eritrean and Ethiopian cultures when celebrating her heritage. Many times she has appeared publicly with dresses and traditional braids that represent her African roots.

Together with Senait Gebregiosis, the journalists are representing their Eritrean heritage to the world. Before making big leaps, Hannah could not afford her financial needs. Now, she can do it comfortably. Her yearly salary could be approximately $150,000.

Her physical attributes are also questioned by most of her fans. She has dark skin, dark long hair, brown eyes, a gracious height of 5 feet and 7 inches, and a weight of probably 64 kg.
