Jiaoying Summers is an American standup comedian, actress, producer, and philanthropist. Together with her partner, they run Beijing Summers Media. She is popular for posting funny reels on Instagram and Tik Tok. Summers poses as a Uber driver called Uber Karen interacting with her clients and roasting people’s names. Summers was born on 18th January 1990 in Henan Province, China. Summers was born when the one-child policy was at its peak in the country. Male children were preferred to females. When she was born, her father wanted to do away with her but her mother pleaded with him to keep her, to which he agreed.
Growing up in China was challenging as the standards of beauty were considered tall, light-skinned, and pointy-chinned while she was a short darker skinned, rounded face with big lips. Summers traveled to the United States at the age of 18 where she studied International Economics at the University of Kentucky. As a student, Summers worked at her family construction firm, Hongquiqu Construction Group, as the President of New Business Development. After a year, she got the opportunity to intern at IMAX, where she learned the dealings of the filming industry. While at Imax she got the opportunity to participate in the Asia Society’s US-China Film Summit. In 2014, she participated in the Internationa beauty pageant and won the title of Miss China.
Her journey to becoming a comedian started as a failure to do acting. Summers resorted to acting because she felt it was the only way she could get people’s attention. She went to Howard Fine to train as an actor but her accent was a problem. Summers auditioned for a TV series called Rebel but got rejected because they needed a girl with an Oakland accent. However, John Singleton, who was the moderator, advised her to try comedy as he was impressed by the few funny lines she did while auditioning. John’s words stirred new goals, which she started pursuing.

Jiaoying started doing stand-up comedy at local clubs and posting short funny videos on Tik Tok. The positive response she got from the internet encouraged her to go even harder. In 2020, she had more than 300,000 followers. In 2021, she rose to more than a million and received sponsorship deals of $10,000 and $20,000 in a month, more than what she earned as a stand-up. One time her Tik Tok account got suspended because of criticizing the one-child policy in China, with which she was a victim.
After protesting, Tik Tok reinstated her account. Summers extended her videos to Instagram where she was received well. As of 2022, she has 156k followers. Jiaoying still does stand up. She is a regular at Comedy Store, The Laugh Factory, and The Hollywood Improv. Summers participated and starred in Netflix’s show, Joke Festival.
While she is not doing jokes, Jiaoying participates in community work. She is the international ambassador for Linzhou Charity Federation. and the Asia Ambassador for Operation USA. Together with Asians like Lyanna Kea and Sher-Min Chow, Summers represents the Asian community to the world. Jiaoying is also a big force in changing the old narrative of Asia American women.
