There comes a point in life when the decisions we make determine the people we become more than our background and childhood. Life teaches that it is possible to recover from any kind of setback regardless of how bad it was. Nona Jones is the evidence that making an intentional decision to be great is the only way out of mediocrity. She is a woman of many hats. Mrs. Jones is a powerful preacher, speaker, executive, and author. She grew up in a disadvantaged environment but even this was not an obstacle to what she was destined to become.

Nona Jones was born on 23rd July 1982. She was born out of rejection. Her mother never wanted to raise her because she had an unwanted pregnancy. Two months after her birth, Nona’s father passed on. Her mother later remarried an abusive man who damaged Nona’s childhood.

Now Nona is in on a recovery and restoration mission. She redefined marriage by getting married to Timothy L Jones 2 months after she graduated. Together, the couple pastor at Open Door Church. Many resisted their early marriage claiming she was pregnant but Nona revealed that she got intimate for the first time on her wedding night. In 2023, they celebrated 19 years of marriage and 2 children. Her marriage suffered difficulties at the onset as Nona lost her first pregnancy. Doctors told her she had minimal chances of getting another child. She called on God, who had her and blessed her with two sons. Timothy and Isaac.

Nona’s painful experience started when her mother married a man she barely knew. She began by settling with different boyfriends before making a decision to settle with Nona’s stepfather. The man turned out to be a child molester. When Nona’s mother was at work, he would touch and hold her tightly. The man was arrested but later returned to their house and continued sexually harassing Nona for four years.

All the while, Nona had never heard of the word of God until she was invited for the first time to church. The preacher who seemed to know what she was going through spoke of God being a father of the fatherless. These words sparked curiosity within her and soon she began studying the Bible for herself. At 12 years old, Nona gave her life to Jesus.

Coming years, she dedicated her life to ministry. She became a youth leader and worship leader and by the time she was joining college, she was ordained as a pastor. Being a bold pastor on campus made her popular in college and around school. Her powerful style of delivering the word of God made her a sought-after speaker and preacher of the word. She began getting invitations to speak at conferences, events, and churches.

As she excelled in ministry, her academics also reflected the same. She was a student at the University of Florida where she earned a degree in communication. She went further and joined the Warrington College of Business where she did a Master’s in Business administration.

In 2008, she joined Havard University for a minor course in Public Disputes and Negotiation where she learned to mediate and use mediation to resolve identity-based disputes.

As a student, Nona Jones was privileged to work as a news director and community relations coordinator at Sunshine Broadcasting. Her responsibilities were managing the staff of three radio stations, reviewing resumes, recruiting, and being a conduit between the broadcast and the community.

She also worked in Nationwide Insurance as a Community Relations Manager in the executive leadership team. Nona worked there for three years before getting a job at Gainesville Regional Utilities as the Community and Government Relations Director at the local, state, and national levels. She developed the legislative agenda of the company, managed lobbying efforts, retained outside counsel, and worked with constituent groups. She served here for 6 years before moving to Jacksonville as a Chief External Affairs Officer for PACE Center for Girls.

She defined her departure from PACE as a divine calling. The Holy Spirit had instructed her to leave the job she was working. With childlike faith, Nona called her boss, had a meeting with her, and announced her departure.

When she arrived home, she got a call from Meta (Facebook) offering to give her a job as the director of North America Community Partnerships and Faith Global. She helped Facebook build strategic partnerships which helped bring the social media platform close to different communities in the world as well as deepen its impact.

Nona worked for Mark Zuckerberg for 5 years before moving on to work as a Chief Content and Partnership Officer for YouVersion. Her responsibilities at YouVersion are leading the team that shapes the digital discipleship of more than 10 million people globally.

In addition to her childhood trauma, Nona Jones also grew up as an obese child. Doctors classified her as morbidly obese. She used food as an escape from childhood sexual abuse and verbal abuse from her mother. She struggled with eating disorders from high school through college and in her 20s. Nona weighed 279 lbs by the time she was 30.

One time she walked a short distance and struggled to catch a breath. She prayed to God to help her lose weight only for God to reveal to her that she needed to exercise and eat healthily. She stopped eating junk food, and fries and committed herself to drinking water. After 15 months, Nona had lost 100lbs. She also had a minor surgery to remove excess skin. For close to 10 years now, Nona has maintained a healthy weight of 165 lbs. Nona also has 15 half marathon medals on her trophy shelf.

More than all her physical and professional achievements, Nona Jones has remained faithful to God. She has maintained her zeal and passion for God since she accepted Jesus in her life. Together with her husband, they lead Open Door Church in Florida.
