JoiStaRR was born on 2nd April 1979 in Los Angeles. Her mother’s service to the church as a choir member inspired JoiStaRR to try music and also perform on big stages. Her brother Warryn Campbell, a record producer and songwriter, motivated JoiStaRR to invest full time into music after getting success in his niche. From this inspirational figure in her life, JoiStRR built herself to become a versatile musician.

Have you ever imagined what it would be like meeting me for the 1st time? Finding me, finally, after all the time, patience, prayers, and maybe even tears? Well I’ve imagined you. I prayed for you. I’ve kissed several frogs only to find that none of them were you. I often wonder what’s taking so long. Starting in Music, Acting, and Real Estate.
Witnessing the success that was associated with investing in music led JoiStaRR to quit her studies to become a doctor to pursue a music career. With the help of her brother, she started as a professional songwriter and soon she was writing songs for big names like Chris Brown, Mario, Christina Milian, Tamia, and Brandy.
Her journey in singing started in 2002. She got signed with J Records but later moved to her brother’s My Block Records label. JoiStarr’s singing career rocked with hits like Watch Me, Keep it Moving, and Everything which featured Jadakiss. She received her first Grammy Award when Mary Mary’s single Heaven was nominated for Best Gospel Song.
In 2008, she met Kanye Weste and asked if she could sing for him as a background singer forever. Mr. West declined the offer, telling her she was too talented to be in the background for long. For 5 years, she served as Kanye Weste background musician and during his Glow in the Dark Tour. JoiStarr was also set to join West in his Fame Kills Tour but the tour got canceled when West got into an altercation with Lady Gaga.
Being inactive in the music scene had JoiStarr investing in real estate as an agent running Nest Seekers selling luxury apartments and developing land in Beverly Hills and around the country. Investing and succeeding in real estate and still balancing her role as an actress and singer has had her featured in Forbes Magazine and Essence.
In 2013, she released her first EP, Art and Beat, through her brother’s record label. In 2019, she extended her influence into acting and got a feature in Strive, which has famous actor Danny Glover. In 2020, JoiStarr released her first album Magic, which was inspired by her time as a BGV for Kanye West.
Why Does JoiStarr Sing Secular Music?
Although JoiStarr grew up singing in Church, she does not sing gospel music. In an interview with Essence, she confessed to struggling for years between choosing to sing gospel and other genres. JoiStarr’s decision to do RnB stems from feeling she was selected to sing songs for artists and people who will never go to church or believe in God. Her idea of singing this type of music does not go well with many Christians but she has stuck to her guns. Her musical influences come from inspirational musicians like Erica Campbel (of Mary Mary), her sister-in-law, and Shanta Atkins, who is also her in-law.
